BEAUTIFUL CATALPA FLOWERS
Monday, 6:30 AM. 68 degrees, wind S, light. The sky is mostly overcast but the barometer predicts sunshine. There is low-lying fog on the channel and the ferry horns are sounding. All the Fourth activities dodged the occasional rain squalls. The fireworks in Bayfield and LaPointe last night were excellent.
There are two big northern Catalpa trees (C. speciosa) in bloom in Washburn along Hwy. 13. Most every farm yard had its Catalpa tree in years past. They are very showy in flower and make a suitable shade tree, but are seldom planted these days because their large bean-like fruits are rather messy. Too bad, as life itself is a pretty messy business.
