MALE SAPSUCKER WOODPECKER, DRUMMING ON A STOP SIGN |
DOMESTIC PEAR TREE IN FULL BLOOM... |
...FLOWER PANICLES |
Domestic pear trees are blooming around town and in the orchard country. Pears and apples have been cultivated and hybridized for thousands of years, and there are countless varieties of the past and present. There is no more beautiful tree in flower than a rugged old pear tree.
The male sapsucker woodpecker who has been waking up the neighborhood with his incessant early morning drumming sat still long enough yesterday for me to take his photo. He has learned to use the stop sign on the corner of Tenth St. and Old Military to amplify his territorial pronouncements.
His hapless rival, answering his proclamations by tapping on a tree in the woods across the street, is seriously outgunned, and I fear will na'ere win fair lady.
But as they say, all's fair in love and war!
