6/13/11 POPPIES, IRIS, WEIGELA AND HAWTHORN IN BLOOM

ANOTHER FINE DAY

ORIENTAL POPPIES

WEIGELA'S ARE  LOOMING

HAWTHORN IN BLOOM
Monday, 8:30 AM.  62.5 degrees, wind W, calm.  He sky is blue, the barometer high, another fine day.
It was good to have the historic Christ Episcopal Church open again yestrday, even if only for the summer.  The service went well, but will be much better once an organist is found.
Oriental poppies are blooming, also tall bearded Iris, and Weigela florida shrubs, which can be very effective, especially in an “old fashioned” landscape.
Hawthorns are very  useful small, mostly native, trees.  They bloom well and most have attractive small, apple-like fruit.  Unfortunately most are very thorny and wide spreading, which limits their usefulness as street and park trees.
