Thursday, 7:30 AM. 57 degrees, wind NE, calm. The sky is overcast and the barometer is down. It looks like rain later in the day.
The tall ship Niagara, home port Erie, Pennsylvania, stopped in Bayfield yesterday on its way to Duluth. It is operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and is an exact replica of Commodore Perry’s ship which defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, and during which he made two historic statements: “Don’t give up the ship,” and “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” It is a training ship and seagoing college classroom, and although motorized, it mostly makes its way under sail. It flies a United States flag of the time and a banner with the motto, “Don’t Give Up The Ship.” The sailing vessel technology is amazing, at least as complicated as anything we do today, although of course far more physical.
The Black Hawk Marina garden improves every year, an old age home for retired fishing boats, surrounded by a sea of gardens. Very well done!
