....BUT YOU CAN'T STOP A GOOD DOG TEAM |
Sunday, 9:00 AM. -5 degrees F, wind W, calm. The sky is perfectly clear, the humidity is 79% and the barometer is trending upward, now at 30.32" It is a perfect winter morning.
Winter Saturdays can be pretty intense in Bayfield. The morning started out with views of neighbor Sherman and two young helpers shoveling the snow off his roof. I am not taking that as an invitation to do the same.
Then on the way back from the Bayfield-Town of Russell Recycle Center the road turned treacherous coming into town from the north, and several vehicles ended up stuck in the roadside ditch.
Then of course there was the Apostle Islands Dog Sled Race, which we always watch at the Star Route crossing. It is low-key fun, the dogs are great, the mushers intent on winning. There is always bound to be some unexpected excitement, as when an outgoing and incoming dog team (both legs of the race cross the road at the same point) get all tangled up. Several years ago there was a race team of beautiful, matched Irish Setters (yes, they were good sled dogs) that crossed the road and made a bee-line for the free hot dogs. Tongues lolling and tails wagging, they were not about to leave without their treats. I don't think they won the race but they were the only team to win the hot dogs.
