CROCUS AND ICE

THE CROCUS ARE STILL BLOOMING...

...AS THE ICE CONTINUES TO PILE UP ON AREA BEACHES

CANADIAN ICE BREAKERS CLEARING SHIPPING LANES

Saturday, 8:45 AM.  Wind SW, calm with light gusts.  The sky is clear, the humidity 84%.  The barometer stands at 30.41" and is trending down rather precipitously, predicting some rain in a day or two.  The night temperatures are warming up, which may reduce the flow of maple sap for making maple sugar.
The Crocus continue to bloom, a nice long season for these cheerful little bulbs.  Meanwhile, strong northerly winds continue to push floating lake ice high onto area beaches.
Out on the Big Lake, pack ice as deep as eight feet has clogged shipping lanes to the Sioux Locks, trapping ten to eighteen  huge lakers needing to be broken loose by Canadian ice breakers.  The winter had frozen over 75% of Lake Superior, and as all that ice melts it floats about in huge ice packs blown by the wind.
