6/02/08 INVASIVES

Monday, 7:30 AM. 52 degrees, wind NE, light with stronger gusts. The channel is smooth to wrinkled. The barometer predicts sunny skies, presently blue. We had a W wind come through with some rain yesterday at dinner time, it blew enough I would not have wanted to be on the lake.
The humming birds are having their little aerial battles over rights to the feeder, the contents of which they have diminished by half.
What many call a “red maple” because it has red leaves all year long is an old fashioned cultivar of the Norway maple, Acer platanoides, those around Bayfield probably the variety ‘Crimson King”. These are mostly selections of the even older ‘Schwedler’ cultivar. Many people like them as accent trees particularly around old homes. All Norway maples and their cultivars should be used sparingly, as they seed heavily and are quite invasive in woodlands. They are a major invasive in New York City’s Central Park, for instance.
A lone wolf has taken a calf out on Soper Road, near the Larsen Sugar Bush. The carcass was only partially eaten, and the DNR folks say if it had been an attack by a pack it would all have been eaten. One bite to the spine is all it takes for a wolf to kill a calf.
There is a Tree Board meeting this afternoon, and plenty of work to do until then.
