9/06/10 WILD NATURE DOESN'T NEED EMBELLISMENT

WILL SHE GET A TUMMY ACHE?
SURF'S UP
LAST OF THE BEACH DAY S
FLAILING THE WATERS
STONED FISHERMEN

Monday, Labor Day. 8:00 AM, 56 degrees, wind ENE, brisk. The sky is blue with some high thin white clouds but the barometer predicts rain. The surf was up at the beach this morning.
Late yesterday afternoon we took a drive around the Washburn back roads, and we saw a number of deer, unusual for that time of day. This one was eating mushrooms, which looked like Amanitas. Will she get a tummy ache? The beach had a last rush of sitters and waders, and there were two surf fishermen flailing the water.
I was surprised and a little miffed to see these cairns of stacked rocks in the Sioux above Big Rock. Are they stone fishermen, erected by stoned fishermen? Or, the local Wicken coven staking out their territory? In any case, I don’t like my river being the site of such performance art. Wild nature doesn’t need embellishment.
