A STORM STORY, SWEET CHERRIES, AND MORE S'MORES

IN THANKFUL MEMORY OF...

...DELIVERY FROM GREAT PERIL...

...ON THE LAKE SUMMER 1892

'LAPIN' SWEET CHERRIES ARE IN AT APPLE HILL ORCHARDS

MORE S'MORES
Monday, 7:00 AM.  59 degrees F, wind calm, sky overcast and it is raining lightly.  The humidity is 91% and the barometer is down, at 29.92%.  Leslie and Allison were going to fly back to Texas today, but they fly standby and the today's flights are filled.  Tomorrow's flights have lots of empty seats so they will be with us another night.
Historic buildings often have great stories to tell, and historic churches are no exception.  Our Christ Church, Episcopal, built in 1867, certainly has its share, and this tryptic of stained glass windows in the sanctuary tells one to all who have the curiosity to approach them and read their inscriptions: "In Thankful Memory Of Deliverance From Great Peril On The Lake, Summer 1892."
The windows, the story goes, were commissioned and installed by the then pastor of the parish, who had two young sons who ventured out on the lake in a small boat one summer day.  A sudden, violent storm, such as is common here, arose, and threatened to capsize the boat and doom the boys.  But they prayed and survived, evidently cold, wet and scared, but otherwise none the worse for the experience and doubtless a lot wiser.
We have kayakers and sailors who drop in to attend a summer Sunday service and they are encouraged to gain a bit of wisdom form the windows.  And in a sudden storm on the Great Lake an impromptu  prayer may also be very useful.
After church we drove out to Apple Hill Orchards to see if there were still cherries being harvested.
We found them picking a second crop of sweet cherries, this time the variety 'Lapin'.   We thought them even better than the earlier 'Cavaliers' and certainly at least the equal to a 'Bing' which is not hardy here.
And what better way to end a Sunday and a Bayfield vacation than with s'mores (toasted marshmallow and Hershey chocolate bar melted between two graham crackers)  made on an open fire in the backyard?
