THE ALDO LEOPOLD BENCH AND STRAWBERRY-RHUBARB PIE

THE ALDO LEOPOLD GARDEN BENCH

LOOKS TIPPY BUT ISN'T

PLENTY OF ROOM FOR TWO

STRAWBERRY-RHUBARB PIE

Sunday, 8:30 AM.  54 degrees F, wind N, light.  the sky is clear with a few errant white clouds passing through.  The humidity is 82%, the barometer up at 30.23".  It is another fine morning, and we are all going to church.  Leslie and Allison are going home tomorrow, we will drive them to Duluth where they will take the shuttle to the Minneapolis airport.  Tomorrow's blog may be late as a consequence.
Neighbor Mike made the above bench for me.  It is a slightly larger version of the original designed by the  famous
Wisconsin environmentalist, Aldo Leopold.  Made of treated Douglas fir 2X10's it seats two comfortably. It could also be made of cedar, which would be lighter but more expensive.  It's unusual design saves space in the landscape or on the porch.  It looks tippy, but has a perfect center of ballance, and the more weight that is put on it, the more stable it becomes.  It easily seats two ample-bottomed adults (not in the picture).    For detailed plans using 2X8's, use the blog search engine.
We placed the bench in front of the garden, along Old Military Road, so folks can "set a spell" when walking up the rather steep hill.  You are invited to stop by and try it out, and we can make one for you if you wish, introductory price, $135.00 picked up in Bayfield.
The strawberries picked a few days ago, along with some fresh garden rhubarb, went into this fine pie, which we had with ice-cream for desert yesterday evening.  I saved a generous slice for  for myself for breakfast (without ice cream;  I'm on a diet).
