NEW ENGLAND ASTER

TAKE THE BAYFIELD GHOST WALK WHEN YOU VISIT

OLY AND LENA

HAPPY GIRL

Wednesday, 7:30 AM.  51.5 degrees, wind SSE, calm.  The sky is mostly clear with some haze in the east.  The barometer predicts rain again but whatever fronts have been coming through are very weak.  Yesterday afternoon was warm and sunny enough to put the top down on the old Saab on the way back from Ashland.
The daffodil planting has started but it is a big job and will take a few days more.
More scarecrows, but then we will turn our camera to Applefest preparations, which have begun in earnest.
You will notice Oly and Lena in front of the Lutheran (“Lutran” in the Norvegian vernacular) church.  If I were politically correct I would not tell an Oly and Lena joke, but I think the Bayfield Norski’s are tough enough handle it:  Oly died, and Lena went to the newspaper to publish the death notice.  The editor asked what she wanted in it. She replied, “Oly died.”  The editor said, “is that all? It costs $25 for the first five words anyway, so you may as well say more.” To which Lena replied, “O.K.; ‘Oly died, boat for sale’.”
A sure sign of summer’s end is the blooming of the latest aster, the New England, Aster novae-angliae, also known in England as Michaelmas daisy because it blooms for Saint Michael the Archangel’s feast day.  It is a very robust plant for both the perennial garden and prairie or meadow plantings.
Poor old Lucky leapt (can you believe it) off the deck, missing all three steps, and landed splat on the ground yesterday morning. It’s as though I would have taken a flying leap off the back of the pickup truck.  I would have landed “splat” too and laid there wondering, “Now why the hell did I do that?” I don’t think he broke a hip, and he doesn’t seem to be in any real pain.  I have been carrying him in and out of the house, as he can’t get up by himself. He doesn’t seem to have much strength in any of his limbs. I’m trying to get him to take some more baby aspirins but he just wants to be left alone at present.  He’s been pretty low at other times so we won’t give up on him yet.  Us old dude's gotta stick together.
