5/08/11 CALL YOUR MOTHER!!!

STORM CLOUDS OVER MADELINE AND BASSWOOD ISLANDS

DON''T JUST SIT THERE, CALL YOUR MOTHER!

TREMBLING ASPEN IN BLOOM
Sunday, 10:00 AM.  54 degrees, wind N, calm.  There were some ominous storm clouds in the northeast earlier as a lone eagle fished the Sioux River.  But the sun is poking through a hazy atmosphere and the barometer, although down, predicts a partly cloudy day.
The quaking, or trembling, aspens (Populus tremuloides), have begun to bloom. The male and female flowers are borne on separate catkins, on separate male and female trees. When many aspens are in bloom it is quite noticeable, whole forested areas turning a fuzzy, grayish white.  Trees that we don’t normally think of as “blooming” can be very interesting and beautiful in flower, if we just know what  to look for, and when.
An alert to my grown children: your mother is sitting patiently by the phone today, waiting for you to call.  And to all the other children out there, young and old, if you are fortunate enough to still have your mother with you, get on the phone or go to visit her if you can.   For the rest of us, a few moments of grateful reflection will have to suffice.
