CLAY PIGEONS BOUNCED ALL ABOUT IN HIGH WINDS

Monday, 8:30 AM.  43.5 degrees, wind W, moderate to strong, still at times gale force, as it has been for several days now.  The sky is overcast except for a clear band to the SE.  The barometer is down but so is the humidit, and this front may be mostly bluster and little rain.
Yesterday’s Town of Russell Turkey Shoot looked like another success to me, in spite of high winds and somewhat chilly temperatures.  Kids events (BB gun, 22 rifle) took up much of the time and there were great prizes for the winners in every category, children’s and adults’.  There were no competitions for rifles larger than 22 caliber, I think because it would have just gotten too complicated, but the pistol shooting event really brought out serious firepower.  There was a skeet shoot ( I did not do well. I had a hard time seeing orange clay birds jumping every-which-way in the wind, on a leafy orange background…of course so did everyone else!).
The skeet shoot was followed by a muzzle loader competition, which was very popular.  The muzzle loaders are black powder, single shot guns that require the lead ball to be rammed down the muzzle of the gun and have to be constantly cleaned. It’s all too complicated and finicky to spark my own interest.
The final competition was the tounge-in-cheek “Violator’s” event, that involved loading a rifle and  firing through an open car window, while seated. That one was a real hoot, and it looked to me as though some of the competitors have had a lot of real-life experience.
The Town of Russell includes the Rez, which not only has a lot of deer, it has a lot of hungry little mouths to feed, and if a few deer get shined to fill the freezer for winter I for one can’t get very upset about it. The crowd was at least half from the Rez, and even though the whole township is probably  below the poverty line, there was an awful lot of fine weaponry displayed,  and a there were a whole lot of good marksmen (and women).
The Turkey Shoot supports the shooting range and hunter and shooting safety classes for local youth.  The Town of Russell was also well represented at Applefest, selling home baked apple pies to support Town activities.  Its final fund raiser of the year is on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the annual fall dinner and gun raffle drawing will be held at the Town Hall on Old Hwy. K.  It is a home style dinner (ham, scalloped potatoes, coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, rolls, pickles, cranberries and many pies and other deserts fresh from neighborhood ovens) that is bound to get everyone primed for the coming Holidays, a feast we try hard not to miss. Tickets are $9.00 for adults, $6.00 for children twelve and under. Besides the  big gun raffle there are lots and  lots of door prizes,  Everyone is welcome, social time starts at 4:30 (refreshments available), dinner is 5:00-7:00, raffle and door prize drawings at 7:00. Bonfire afterwards, weather permitting.
