8/02/11 WHITE WATER LILLIES, ANOTHER INVASSIVE AND ECONOMIC PARRASITES

WHITE WATERLILY

CYPRESS SPURGE
Tuesday, 8:30 AM.  70 degeres, wind SW, calm.  The sky is overcast with dark rain clouds, and we had a storm last night that left us about .4” of rain, and  the barometer predicts more .
White water lilies, Nymphaea odorata,  are blooming in the Fish Creek slough on Hwy  2 just west of Ashland.  You may recall hat this is an entirely different genus and species from the yellow water lily, Nelumbo lutea. Although both are in the water lily family, their flowers are very different in form as well as color.
The Cyprus spurge, Euphorbia cyparissius, in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) is an interesting plant in many ways, with an unusual flower and milky latex sap, but it is a rather noxious, invasive pasture and prairie weed.  Many people are sensitive to the sap, so it is best to wear gloves when handling it.
It looks as if we may be taking a baby step towards solving our economic problems today.  Let's hope so.  I see Putin is calling the US an "economic parasite."  He's probably right, since we have been heading towards socialism or evencommunism at a rapid pace. He of all people should know one when he sees one.
