11/01/11 PERSIAN RUGS AND MIGRATING DUCKS

A LEAFY PERSIAN RUG

TAMARACK...THE GOLD STANDARD

RAFTS OF DUCKS ON CHEQUAMEGON BAY

A BUSY BIRDER

Tuesday, 8:00 AM.  42.5 degrees, wind NNE, calm to light, but the high-overcast clouds are moving in from the W.  It is a gray day, and the barometer predicts rain.
The weather  has been wet and mild, many leaves still hanging on trees and shrubs.  The tamarack in the back yard is truly glorious now, and fallen leaves on lawns are as colorful as Persian rugs.
Yesterday must have been a banner day for birdwatchers on Chequamegon Bay in Ashland, as they identified the components of large rafts of mixed ducks several hundreds of yards out from shore.  I unfortunately had no binoculars along but was invited to look at canvasbacks, redheads, scaup and goldeneyes, among others.  One observer said he had identified a western loon, evidently a very rare visitor.
We had many more kids trick-or-treating last night than previous years.  There are a lot of Coast Guard families in town and most of them have children, including one with six girls, ages one to twelve, just up the block. It puts a lot of life into the otherwise mostly adult (read "old") population.
Lucky is doing O.K. but is still tuckered out and badly needs another bath.
