A NEW GOLD STANDARD

FERRY STRUGGLING THROUGH THE ICE

Saturday, 9:00 AM.  33 degrees F, wind calm, sky overcast.  We had a little surprise last night; several inches of wet snow, with more up in the orchard country I am sure. More is predicted for tonight and it will not warm up much today.  That means the maple sap won't rise in the trees today, but should on Monday if it is sunny.
If we don't have a better season than last,  maple syrup and sugar will become an expensive and rare commodity this year.  Even now there are reports of maple sugar heists and other shenanigans in New England.  Perhaps maple syrup it will become the new commodities superstar on the stock exchange, replacing gold. Maybe the world economy would be better off on the maple syrup standard.
It would certainly strengthen the moribund economies of our Northeastern and upper Midwestern states, most of which seem to have a cultural aversion to new technological innovations.
