...NEW BUILDING
Monday, 8:30 AM. 63 degrees F, wind N, calm, changing to south. It is overcast and quite foggy over the lake. The humidity is 94%, 100% at LaPoint on Madeline Island. The barometer is trending down, now at 29.89". I was going to cut firewood today but it has started to drizzle, and when I went out this morning I saw that the truck has a flat tire. And to top it off the coffee didn't perk. Not a good start to the day.
We took a ride down Echo Valley Road, a backwoods logging road late yesterday afternoon, but all was eerily quiet, I suspect because stormy weather is predicted and the barometer was dropping. Don't take that route unless you have a four-wheel drive truck. On the way back to town we encountered what we first thought to be fog on Hwy. 13 west of Red Cliff, then it appeared to be smoke. It turned out to be huge trucks and and delivering and applying lime to a big hayfield. The price of hay must really be up, as it looked like a very expensive undertaking.
As we entered the Rez from the west we noted again a great deal of construction going on and stopped to take a look. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is building a new, much larger health center for the reservation, I suspect it is in part at least due to an increase in the Reservation population because of the current recession. In any case it dwarfs the present facility.
The health center primarily serves the Red Cliff Reservation but can also be used by nearby non-tribal residents, and I have done so several times in the past. If it has an expanded staff and updated facilities I may do so again. I do not know whether they will be providing emergency care. The present facility does not, except for minor concerns.
