AND, LITTLE GREEN APPLES
|
Sunday, 7:45 AM. 64 degrees F at the ferry dock, 61 on the back porch. Wind SW, very light with slightly stronger gusts. The sky has a very high overcast, there is considerable fog over the Islands, and the humidity is 92%. The barometer continues to fall, and now stands at 29.91", presaging rain for tomorrow.
It got chilly enough yesterday evening that I put on my winter jacket to sit on the back porch and watch the Madeline Island fireworks across the channel. Us old folks took the easy way out and stayed home while daughter Eva and granddaughter Katie went downtown and watched the Bayfield display. They also took the ferry to the Island yesterday to watch the LaPointe parade. We did not make that treck either, choosing to do some "porch settin'" instead.
I have often kidded about the weekend of the Fourth being our Bayfield summer, but the cool weather, so welcome to those who visit us from warmer latitudes, has really been evident this year. To add to that "What summer?" feeling, the apples are really maturing fast, as evidenced by the golf-ball sized fruit from a wild tree across the road.
To emphasize something, we used to say, "Sure as God made little green apples..."Well, those little green apples are reminders that the seasons fly by, almost before we know it.
