TOPPLED RED OAK
BASAL ROT
FUNGI
Thursday, 7:00 AM. 43 degrees, wind W, calm. The sky is mostly blue and the barometer predicts partly cloudy.
Red oaks (Quercus rubra) often become dangerously unstable with great age, particularly if multiple trunked allowing infection to enter where the trunks join. In any case rot at the base of the tree and the prop roots often occurs. This large red oak blew down within the last few days. Wood rotting fungi can be an indication of instability. I have seen them topple just from the weight of snow covered leaves or the pull of gravity. Beware!
