4/02/10 ONLY THE STRONGEST...

A NICE DAY, B UT COOL
HUNDREDS OF TUNDRA SWANS ON CHEQUAMEGON BAY
POOL BELOW THE BIG ROCK ON THE SIOUX RIVER
I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN...
DARN!

Friday, 8:00 AM. 42 degrees, wind NE, calm. The sky is partially overcast and the barometer predicts rain, but it is a nice day. If the wind off the lake picks up it will get cold.
We had a good trip to the nurseries, and all the plants for the project are in the truck waiting for Jay and his crew to schlep them down the bluff to the lake shore. We will start the project today but probably not finish.
There are now hundreds of tundra swans on Chequamegon Bay.
On the way back late yesterday afternoon we stopped at the Big Rock on the Sioux River to watch the steelhead trout (rainbow trout that spend most of their lives in the lake and return to their home stream to spawn) attempt to swim up the falls. Those in the photos are about two feet in length. They start in the big pool below and charge up the rapids. Most often an attempt ends in the fish being hurtled back down into the pool. Only the strongest reach the most desirable spawning grounds above.
