FIREWEED, AND A TOTALLY VICIOUS ELECTION SEASON

WILL IT RAIN?

FIREWEED

Saturday, 8:00 AM.  72 degrees F, wind W, light with stronger gusts.  The humidity is 75%.  The sky is mostly overcast with high dark clouds and the barometer predicts rain.  Whether it rains or not, it will not get outrageously hot, thanks to the clouds.  I  have been watering lawns and garden, so it will quite probably rain.
When I took the dog out about 10:30 last night the coyotes were yipping and howling somewhere not far away, the first time I have heard them this summer. I find their serenade quite  welcome, a sign that there is a lot of life going on out there in the night. They say that the presence of coyotes denotes the absence of wolves, as the later drive out the former from their territory.
Fireweed is a tall, conspicuous perennial that often colonizes large areas after a forest fire, thus its common name.  There are several dozen species of Epilobium, in the evening primrose family, in North America. This one I believe is Epilobium angustifolium, native to the Boreal Forest region.  Its big, conical violet flowers are quite beautiful.  Another common name is willow-herb, as its leaves are very willow-like in appearance.  This large patch of fireweed is in bloom along Hwy. 13, just south of the Rez.  It often grows in damp roadside ditches and is quite common in the far north.
The latest talk on the Left accusing Romney of felony charges and/or lying concerning when he quit working at Bain Capital Management before he took over the management of the Salt Lake City Olympics proves beyond a doubt that they are grasping at straws, and that it will be a totally vicious election season.
