5/17/11 A PAPER MOON, CREEPING PHLOX AND FLEEING CANDIDATES

IT WAS ONLY PAPER MOON, HIGH UP  IN A MUSLIN SKY

CREEPING PHLOX

...GROWING IN LAWN
Tuesday, 7:30 AM.  48 degrees, up from near freezing last night.  Wind SSW, dead calm. The barometer again predicts rain bt it must be a very weak low.  A full moon rose early in a crystal clear sky last evening.
Creeping phlox, Phlox subulata, is native to the northeastern US as far west as southern Michigan.  It inhabits gravelly and sandy, poor soils.  It is much used in landscaping as a border plant , and can make a very attractive addition to a lawn in very poor soil, as it will withstand some mowing. Horticultural selections may have white, blue and variegated flowers; the flowers of native plants are pink.
The less viable or less interested Republican contenders for the presidential nomination are beginning to drop out of the race; Huckabee surprisingly, The Donald not so surprisingly, while Newt Gingrich has seriously damaged his conservative credibility by endorsing a plan for compulsory health insurance, while more than half the states in the  Union oppose the concept in federal court.  He may not be gone, but he is certainly on his way!
