1/02/09 MOUNT ASHWABAY:WINTER SPORTS, NATURE, MUSIC

Friday, 8:00 AM. 9 degrees, wind SW, calm. The sky is overcast and fog enshrouds the channel and the Island. About 2" of snow fell last night, but the barometer predicts sun.
Yesterday was the last day for the ferry to run and I expect to hear the wind sled(there are two of them, one smaller and older, and a big, newer one)any time now, they will replace the ferry until the ice road opens.
Joan and I rode around a bit yesterday afternoon, and stopped up at Mount Ashwabay Recreation and Ski area. The new chair lift is operating and the parking lot was pretty full. The bunny hill with tow rope was busy, and people were heading out onto the cross country trails (35k in length). The snow conditions were excellent, with a 30” base. The Jolly Trail parking lot held a half dozen cars.
The Mount Ashwabay Recreation Area is now many hundreds of acres in size, the pieces put together through the joint efforts of many people and organizations, including The Bayfield Regional Conservancy, the Mount Ashwabay Educational Association, Bayfield County, the State of Wisconsin and others. It includes, along with the skiing resources, the Nourse Sugar Bush, and is the summer home of the Big Top Chautauqua, our famous tent show venue. Pikes Creek trout stream flows through it. It is bordered on several sides by Bayfield County Forest lands, which adjoin the National Forest lands to the west. It has become a major recreational, environmental and cultural complex.
