1/11/09 EPHEMERAL VISITORS
Sunday, 8:00 AM. 6 degrees, wind ENE, calm. The sky is mostly cloudy and the barometer predicts snow, although the air may be too dry to do so.
Last evening about 4:30 we were driving back from Washburn and the full moon, rising over the Islands, was spectacular, a huge pink disc hanging in a smoky sky. Such scenes seldom last more than a few moments, in this instance not long enough to get the camera, and a photo of the then silver moon rising over our weather vane ten minutes later will have to suffice.
Yesterday the feeder was inundated with pine siskins, little birds like diminutive goldfinches but a little less colorful, and with similar songs. They flit about in flocks from place to place, and do not stay long. Last year we saw them not at all, so we were pleased they dropped by to say hello.
