5/05/10 WHEN WRONG BECOMES RIGHT

PASQUE FLOWERS OPEN IN THE SUN
RED ELDER BLOSSOMS
RED ELDER BUSH

Wednesday, 8:00 AM. 46 degrees, up from 37 degrees at 7:00 AM. Wind NW, calm. The sky is cloudy and the barometer predicts rain.
I saw two very small brown birds yesterday which I think were a species of wren. The warbler migration should be starting soon.
The Pasque flowers which I mentioned a few days ago were fully open in the sun yesterday, they are quite beautiful.
A few years ago a bird dropped a seed of the red -berried elder (Sambucus pubens) in the herb garden rock wall. It is not the best spot for it but it is determined to live there and I am happy to have this far northern species in the landscape as its luminous red fruits are very attractive. It differs from the common elderberry of wine-making fame (Sambucu canadensis) in the color of the berries and the shape of the inflorescence, the common elder having purple fruit and a flat, disc-like compound flower head.
Plant are being delivered for several landscape jobs today and I will be very busy for awhile.
