10/08/10 VIRDICT: UGLY BUT EFFECTIVE

DAWN OF ANOTHER FINE BAYFIELD DAY
THE WASPINATOR

Friday, 7:30 AM. 51 degrees, wind W, very light. The sky is mostly clodudless but somewhat hazy, the barometer predicts rain but it is still very dry (33% humidity).
You will remember my Waspinator, I am sure. An artificial wasp nest designed to keep wasps away, it works on the theory that wasps, as territorial creatures, will stay away from the nests of other wasps. We put one on our deck and one on the patio of our Garden View tourist apartment. They engendered many questions over the season. Our observations are anecdotal, not scientific, but Joan and I are convinced Waspinaters are effective. Which reminds me of the joke about the New Jersey man who put a sign over his house door that said, "May this house be safe from tigers." His neighbor said to him, "But, there are no tigers in New Jersey." To which the man replied, "See, it works!" The only drawback to the Waspinator is that it is rather rather ugly, but so are wasps in one’s soda can. Google “Waspinator” to find out how to buy one.
