10/16/10 MARE'S TAILS, PARACHUTES AND BITTER FRUIT

MORNING SKY FILED WITH MARE'S TAILS
MILKWEED SEEDS
HIGHBUSH CRANBERRY AND ITS' BITTER FRUIT

Saturday, 8:00 AM. 43 degrees, wind WSW, calm. Humidity 35%, the barometer s down, predicting rain but I think not today. A front does seem to be moving in, the partly cloudy sky filled with wispy mare’s tails. I have neglected bringing plants in, but better start this weekend before I get caught unawares. The milkweed pods are splitting open, their seeds floating off on their fluffy parachutes to conquer new lands.
The highbush cranberry, or maple-leaved Viburnum, bushes are outstanding this year, both in leaf color and fruit. The botanical names are pretty numerous for this plant, from V. opulous amrricanum to v. trilobum; for a complete discussion ,Google "highbush cranberry" and go to the USDA NCRS website. If you think a raw cranberry is bitter, try one of these.
