5/02/10 PAUSING TO LOOK AND LISTEN

A QUIET MORNING
A LONE KILLDEER PATROLS THE SHORELINE
BEACH STILL LIFE

Sunday, 8:30 AM. 52.5 degrees, wind NE, calm. The sky is cloudless and the barometer predicts sunshine. It is a “perfect ten” Bayfield day.
Lucky and I went to the beach this morning where we were greeted by the lonely, maniacal cry of a loon somewhere out on the bay. Ducks and gulls plied the waters, as a kingfisher plopped into the river and snatched a breakfast minnow. A lone killdeer paced the sandy shore. As we drove up Friendly Valley Road before heading home for our own breakfast a goshawk dove across the road. It is a deceptively quiet morning, but with a lot going on if one only pauses to look and listen.
