5/13/10 TAKING IT AS IT COMES

JUST A GARDEN IN THE RAIN

PEAR BLOSSOMS
THE OLD PEAR TREE

TRILLIUM

Thursday, 8:00 AM. 45 degrees, wind N, calm. The sky is overcast and it has been raining, .5” so far, and the barometer predicts more.
I saw a hummingbird at the feeder yesterday, confirming Joan’s sighting.
We took a ride down Jammer Hill Road (better put it in 4-wheel drive) looking for Trilliums yesterday before dinner and found some in bloom. Trillium grandiflorum, in the Lily family, prefers rich deciduous forests and we do not have as many here in our poor, sandy soils as somewhat further south.
The old pear tree in Fountain Garden Park is blooming nicely. It bears rock hard pears that are hardly edible by man or beast.
We have a big tree delivery today, rain or shine, and plenty else that needs to be done in between. One needs a rain day once in a while and we take them as they come.
Garden Talk radio show on Wisconsin Public Radio tomorrow, broadcast from Bayfield!
