Sunday, 10:00 AM. 58 degrees, wind SW, calm. The sky is partly cloudy and the barometer predicts rain, although the humidity is still relatively low at 39%.
The weather continues to be exceptional and although color is now past its peak and many leaves are down, some plants really stand out. The fields of blueberry bushes at Highland Valley Farm are blood red, as are the usually mundane hedge maples (Acer campestre). The beaked hazelnut bush (Corylus cornuta) is brilliant with bright yellow leaves streaked with green, and the orange-russet leaves of the occasional mountain maple (Acer spicatum) literally light up the woods.
We went to the beach this morning and made a dozen casts with no action, although the fish are supposedly suspended at about 40’ depth out in the bay, and the pool below the Big Rock on the Sioux reportedly is filled with huge brown trout. It seems the fish are miraculously transposed from one place to another without ever bumping into a hook.
