10/01/10 APPLEFEST BEGINS

BEAUTIFUL APPLEFEST DAWN
THERE'S A STORY BEHIND THIS SCARECROW
NEW ENGLAND ASTER
LAST TO BLOOM
Friday, 7:00 AM. 48 degrees, wind W, calm. The sky is mostly overcast but there is a fine sunrise and the barometer predicts partly cloudy skies. A good opening day for Applefest, and we will tour the shops and booths today rather than on a more crowded tomorrow.
The “Queen’s Barge” scarecrow refers to Bayfield’s Queen Mary, local philanthropist, community leader and artist, who was landed at Port Bayfield on the Outer Island barge recently for her 70th birthday celebration, which lasted three days. Small towns have character.
The blooming of the New England Aster, Aster Angliae-novae, pretty well denotes the end of the gardening season. It will be quite pretty until a hard frost.
