10/11/10 WILD CLEMATIS, GUNS AND DAFFODILS

VIRGIN'S BOWER SEED HEADS
CLEMATIS VIRGINIANA
TOWN OF RUSSELL "TURKEY SHOOT"

Monday, 49 degrees, wind W, calm. It is partly cloudy and the barometer predicts rain, but the humidity is only 38%.
The virgin’s bower, a wild clematis (Clematis virginiana) is a native climbing vine which one might confuse with wild cucumber at a distance, but the flowers and seed heads are very distinct, looking like anemone (also in the buttercup family). This one was west of Port Wing along the lakeshore, but is fairly common in our area.
Being out for a drive yesterday we saw a sign for the annual Town of Russell Turkey Shoot at the shooting range off of Hwy K. It has nothing to do with shooting turkeys but is a sporting event, mostly for parents and kids with their 22’s. We drove in, as I wanted to buy one of the event caps, my old one having been appropriated by our daughter Greta in Ohio. I didn’t take any pictures as I don’t think it proper to take photos of children without their parents' consent, but I love this kind of country event, increasingly rare in our politically correct society. Children who grow up with hunting and guns in their lives seldom abuse the privilege, and there is no better way to assure our second amendment rights. In Denver where our daughter Eva teaches in the public schools a child can be expelled for pointing an index finger at another; how absurd.
We hope to get the remaining 1,200 daffodils planted this morning if the weather cooperates
