THE SUN STRUGGLES THROUGH THE VAPOR
IT IS A HUSHED MORNING
LET THE RACES BEGIN
Wednesday, 8:15 AM. 15 degrees, wind W, dead calm. The channel is icing over, the sky is mostly overcast, the pale sun struggling up through the vapor. The barometer predicts snow.
It is a hushed morning, with the occasional sounds very prominent in the quiet. A pileated woodpecker is calling raucously between repeated drumming on some hollow tree trunk, and the crunching sound of the ferry breaking ice echoes up the hillsides. We met no one on our walk.
The Ashland ice racing track is plowed, and a couple of vehicles were slip-sliding around it yesterday, trying it out. Modified stock cars race on weekends while the ice lasts.
Lucky’s visit to the vet went well, he is doing O.K. for a dog 84 years old in human terms. And he has not gained an ounce. Don’t worry, Lucky, your hot dog for breakfast will continue!
