6/02/11 MORE CRAB APPLES

A "DOVELY MORNING"

BEAUTIFUL CRAB APPLE

THIS ONE IS A GOOD SMALL STREET TREE

MANY SHADES OF BLOOM
Thursday, 7:30 AM.  51.5 degrees, wind W, calm.  The sky is cloudless and the baometer predicts partly cloudy skeis.  It is a fine day. The high winds have subsided.  They  did clear the skies last night, which was moonless and starry.
Flowering crab apple trees are very evident along Bayfield streets, having been  planted over many  years. Their generally low stature allows room under power lines and does not obstruct views. Unfortunately, many do not make good street trees in the long run, because of their low branching, spreading nature, although more narrow and upright varieties can be obtained that make better small trees for along city streets.  Most flowering crab tree cultivars are best planted in home and park landscapes where they have room to spread.
The landscape jobs went well yesterday but we still have several days of work.  The trees arrived in good shape from the nursery, but the warm, windy weather has made trees leaf out and I am very happy they are going in the ground, as this is the end of the shipping season for many varieties, in my opinion.  Evergreens are particularly sensitive to damage as the bud scales drop from new needle growth, and may even be killed if handled improperly at this time.
