6/09/11 LUPINES AND HORSE CHESTNUT FLOWERS

LUPIES ARE EVERYWHERE NOW

HUGE OLD HORSE CHESTNUT

LARGE, PALMATELY COMPOUND LEAVES

UPRIGHT SPIKES OF FLOWERS
Thursday, 8:30 AM.  48 degrees, wind NE, light.  The sky is mostly overcast with high gray clouds, but the barometer predicts sunny skies, and if the wind shifts to the W it will all clear out quickly.
Lupines are beginning to assert themselves, their multi-colored spikes of flowers appearing everywhere now.
The huge old horse chestnut pictured, Aesculus hippocastanum, an introduction from Eurasia long used as an ornamental, is in full bloom in an alleyway between south Sixth and Seventh  streets.  Very beautiful in bloom, but they reach enormous size.
The grandchildren are having a good time, and we are all going to ride the Duluth Pizza Train this evening.
