Friday, 8:00 AM.  44 degrees, wind ENE, calm.  The sky is overcast and the barometer predicts rain.  It feels like fall.
The trip to Duluth was enjoyable for everyone, we went first to the Duluth Aquarium which was not only fun but educational, with mostly native aquatic life displayed, lots of it interactive displays, and a large scale model of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River filled with water and with working ship locks.
The Duluth Scenic Railway Pizza Train was fun, relaxing, and the Domino’s Pizza quite good, one-half a pizza for each, more than enough with a whole pizza left over for lunch today.  The Railway Museum has got to be one of the best anywhere. It was a long day but well worth the effort.
This morning we will celebrate granddaughter Katie’s tenth birthday and daughter-in-law Leslie’s birthday (I don’t want to get in trouble here) at breakfast.
I end this blog on a tragic note: a twenty year old kayaker died late Tuesday afternoon when his craft swamped in rough seas between Little Sand Bay and Sand Island.  He probably succumbed to hypothermia, as the water temperature was 47 degrees F, and he was not wearing a wet suit. He was found but could not be revived.  As I have stated before, many people are just not aware of the danger of Lake Superior; the unprepared, careless or reckless often do not survive.  There were small craft warnings on the weather radio and the waves were obviously dangerous.  I do not know if the Park Service launch facility was closed, it certainly should have been.
