A PEACH TREE GROWS IN BAYFIELD

RED CLIFF CARNIVAL THIS WEEKEND

A HARDY PEACH TREE WITH A DOZEN RIPENING PEACHES
Saturday, 9:00 AM. 61 degrees F at the ferry dock, 56 on the back porch.  Wind SW, calm with light gusts. The sky is azure blue and clear, except for a few wispy white clouds.  Humidity 85%, barometer 30.16" and continuing to drop, predicting a chance of a thunder storm on Monday.
I have said for years that cold hardy peaches should grow well in Hardiness Zone 4B Bayfield, particularly near the lake, but haven't tried it myself.  This young tree is growing on Second Street, perhaps a hundred yards from the water.  Will it survive a really harsh winter? I think so, as our climate and soils are very similar to the New York Hudson River Valley, where I know peaches do really well.
Varieties 'Intrepid' and 'Reliance' are hardy to Zone 4, and are also self-pollinating.  Hauser's Orchard of Bayfield carries a few for it's Red Barn sale every spring.  Pick a sheltered spot near the lake if you are a local and give them a try.
Neighboring Red Cliff Reservation is having a carnival this weekend, it looks like it will be successful and we wish them luck.
