Friday, 8:20 AM. 64 degrees F at the ferry dock, 55 on the back porch. Wind variable and calm, humidity 83%. The sky wears a low overcast, and the barometer is steady, now at 29.86". There are chances of a thunderstorm on Saturday and Monday.
Namy and Stephen's high tech, intensive garden is loaded with produce ready to harvest; a bumper crop. Now the pleasant, rewarding work of canning and freezing will begin, and it is also probably time to roll the windows up on one's vehicle to discourage a zucchini invasion.
When I was a kid we always had a big garden; but, we had no freezer, so Mom canned or pickled everything, the jars of processed produce being carried to the cellar beneath the basement stairs by me and my father.
When the work was all done and the shelves of our winter larder crammed with homey goodness, my Dad liked to sit by the open cellar door, beer in hand, and survey our riches, happy as a king in his counting house, and confident of a winter of abundance.
it's that time of year again.
