WHY?

TWO LARGE WHITE PINES STOODAT THE CORNER OF 9TH ST. AND MANYPENNY AVE...

THE OWNER HAD THEM TOPPED AND TAKEN DOWN...

LOGS REMOVED AND BRANCHES CHIPPED...

LEAVING 3' DIA. STUMPS...
...LOOKS LONELY...

WHICH ARE GROUND OUT, THE HOUSE LEFT WITHOUT ITS TREES

Thursday,  9:00 AM.  56 degrees F at the ferry dock, 51 on the back porch.  Wind NE, gusty at times.  The sky is mostly cloudy, the humidity 87%.  The barometer is mostly steady at 30.5".  The forecast calls for clearing skies with seasonal temperatures.
The house to our east had two big white pine trees in the front yard, some distance from the structure,  probably planted when the house was built in the 1930's.  I thought the trees, about 80' tall, quite handsome.  The owners might have been concerned for the safety of the house, but the trees were sound and healthy.  They decided to take them down; to which I have no objection, as they are their trees.  However, I would like to know why they did so, but I cannot ask them, as they are in a nursing home now.  Perhaps their children made the decision.
The trees were large, the stumps 3' in diameter.  I made a fairly accurate ring count, and both were about 85 years old.  Healthy white pines can live over 300 years, so they were in their prime, and showed no sign of stress or disease.   It certainly cost thousands of dollars to remove them.
I think the old house looks rather lonely now, and a utility line, formerly hidden by the trees, now stretches awkwardly across the property.
