TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING CAN BE VERY BAD

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?...
...TOO MANY ROCKS, TOO MUCH MULCH
Tuesday, 8:00 AM. 71degrees F at the ferry dock, 67 on the back porch.  Wind variable, with occasional light gusts.  The sky has a low overcast and it is thundering and raining.  It is a 3D day...dark, dank and dismal.  The humidity is 97% but the barometer has begun to rise, now at 29.85".  It looks like it will be an unsettled week.  I hope it clears up as we have large conifers being dug and delivered and a planting job to get done.
People like to pretty up, neaten up and overdo almost everything, and that sure applies to mulch.  Here, there were evidently a lot of rocks available, so of course they had to be piled up around young trees.  Then, the next thing to do was fill the the foot high void with wood chips.
Mulch should be 2" to 4" in depth.  That is sufficient organic material to preserve moisture; more than that will only draw roots upward, causing them  to be shallow and weak, and often causing trunk bark to rot at ground level.
Too much of a good thing can be very bad.
