LAKE SUPERIOR: BEAUTIFUL, DANGEROUS AND UNPREDICTABLE |
Tuesday, 9:00 AM. Wind variable, calm. 60 degrees F at the ferry dock, 55 0n the back porch. Sky clear, humidity 75%. Barometer 30.06" and rising, predicting fair weather except for a chance of rain early Thursday morning. Nice weather indeed, but no fall color as yet, with some tree leaves starting to turn brown instead.
Yesterday's Internet news included an account of an extensive search on Lake Superior for a 43 year old father and 9 year old son along with a 61 year old man who left Hancock, in neighboring Upper Peninsula Michigan, Saturday in a 14 foot boat to go fishing, and had not returned.
By Sunday the search area had expanded to 1,500 square miles and included US Coast Guard units from as far away as North Carolina, airplanes, and the Canadian Coast Guard.
Lake Superior is dangerous and unpredictable, and demands total respect and attention to every nautical detail. This appears to be an unfolding tragedy.
Old sailors hereabouts have a saying, that best not be ignored: "The Lake is Boss."
