Friday, 8:00 AM. 30 degrees F, wind NE; it is a chill breeze. The sky is cloudy and overcast with some fog. The barometer has risen slightly, to 30.41 in. The humidity is 93%. It has stopped snowing for now, but everything is a snowy, icy mess. The weather system that has dropped from twelve to eighteen inches of wet snow on the Bayfield Peninsula and a narrow band to the south is still stuck directly over us. Our Texas family had intended to leave for the Minneapolis airport today but have reconsidered and will wait for better weather on Sunday. They have been very polite, and claim to like the snow. But we suspect they are tired of the novelty.
The general Wisconsin fishing season opens tomorrow, but most of the area lakes are still frozen over and the local airports closed, so Governor Walker has cancelled his annual opening day fishing trip to Lake Namakagon.
The red maple on Manypenny Ave. that I watch every spring to see when it is in full flower has swollen buds that are still closed. It is a wise species that has learned its evolutionary lessons well and is still waiting for spring.
