A REAL SPRING DAY |
MORE ON WOODSCAPE MANAGEMENT
Wednesday, 9:00 AM. 60 degrees F and rising. Wind WSW, light with stronger gusts. The barometer is rising, at 30.80 in. The humidity is 50% and falling. It is a real spring day but feels very changeable.
To continue yesterday's discussion of what I am calling woodscape management, I offer the following synopsis of trees and shrubs suitable for planting and underplanting in a mixed hardwoods woodlot.
SHRUBS
Juneberry, Amelanchier,*
Nannyberry*, Viburnum lentago
Arrowwood*, Viburum
dentatum,
Pagoda dogwood*, Corns
alternifolia
American hazlenut,* Corylus
Americana
American cranberry*, Viburnum
trilobum. Or plant in sunny opening
Blueberry+, vaccinium, there are a number of species, plant sun or partial shade, must have acid soil.
DECIDUOUS TREES
Sugar maple, Acer
saccharrum*
Yellow birch, Betula
lutea*, overstory tree.
Ironwood, Ostrya
Virginiana*, understory tree
Showy mountain ash+, Sorbus
decora, understory tree or sun.
American linden*, AKA basswood, Tilia Americana. overstory tree.
CONIFERS
Balsam fir*, Abies balsamea
White spruce+, Picea
glauca
White pine+, Pinus
strobus
Canadian hemlock*, Tsuga
Canadensis
The conifers all prefer an acid soil.

These selections will tolerate
shade or partial shade* in a wooded environment, some need to be planted in a
sunny opening+ to do best. There are many other native trees, shrubs and evergreens
suitable for woods edge planting, and ferns and wildflowers for woodland
planting are also readily available..
Most residential woodlots
are cutover areas with very little diversity, and further north many are mostly birch and
aspen, short lived species needing constant maintenance. Adding longer lived trees and shrubs and
greater species diversity will enhance beauty and wildlife and reduce
maintenance costs in the long run.
